Caregiver burnout is incredibly real, and you absolutely cannot pour from an empty cup. You should find out if you qualify for OPWDD family support services as soon as possible. We accessed these programs through Gateway, and they provided us with temporary respite care and excellent counseling resources. Having a trained professional step in for a few hours a week allowed me to rest and run errands without constantly worrying. They also offer support groups where you can connect with other families facing similar challenges, which helps you realize you are not alone in this journey. Taking care of your own mental health is essential for being a good advocate for your child in the long run.

Support options for caregivers

I am feeling completely burnt out trying to manage my son's schedule and care all by myself. Are there any state programs that offer respite care or family counseling to help us cope?
