Greetings to the whole Rough Stuff family — long time lurker, first time 

posting in this section.

Been deep in the archives lately revisiting some of the most legendary 

sound clashes and juggling sessions ever recorded, and I had to come 

ask the real heads about this.

Some of these clashes were so wicked, so spiritually charged, that 

people in the dance literally couldn't handle the vibes. We're talking 

Killamanjaro vs. Gemini. Stone Love vs. Bass Odyssey. Saxon Studio 

killing Brixton in the 80s. That era of clashing was warfare — pure, 

undiluted cultural warfare on wax and dubplate.

I was watching a documentary recently about the history of sound system 

culture in Jamaica, and there was a quick segment where they interviewed 

an old selector who said he remembered a clash in Kingston where three 

people fainted from the pressure of the bass and had to be rushed out. 

The nearby clinic apparently had no proper intake process — no Hospital 

Management System, nothing organized — and the staff were just writing 

names on paper while chaos ensued outside. Even the documentary crew 

laughed because the sound clash was more organized than the hospital.

That story stuck with me because it showed just how serious and 

all-consuming these events were for the community. Sound system was not 

just music — it was life, health, spirit, everything.
